Robert Douglas Sumner Sr., 62, of Hendersonville died Wednesday, May 10, 2006 unexpectedly at his home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County the son of Thelma Freeman Hawkins of Hendersonville and the late Eli Whitson Sumner and was preceded in death by one son, Gary P. Sumner.. He attended Blue Ridge Community College and owned Custom Television and Electronics for numerous years before retiring to become a private builder. He loved fishing, auto and home repair. He honorably served in the U. S. Navy during the Dominican Republic crisis and Vietnam conflict. Surviving in addition to his mother is a son, Robert Douglas Sumner Jr. of Hendersonville; a daughter, Patty Sumner of Hendersonville; a sister, Mary Ann Sumner Maitland of Hendersonville; three grandsons, Bradley Elkins of Asheville, William and Marshall Sumner of Hendersonville; a great grandson, Ethan and a nephew, Will Mize. A graveside eulogy will be held at St. Paul's Cemetery in Edneyville on Saturday, May 20th, at 4pm.
