Margaret Hammond Smith passed on to the next life on Tuesday 20 November 2007 at 12:15 p.m., and is survived by her son, Charles Thomas Smith, Jr., his wife, Cynthia M. Smith, and her three grandsons, Charles Thomas Smith III, James Alfred Smith, and Mark Virgil Smith. She was born Margaret Louise Hammond on 28 September 1921 to Kate McBee Holcombe and James Alfred Hammond and was the oldest of six children of whom four are still living: Lois Othella Hammond Shipman, James Alfred Hammond, Jr., William Edward Hammond II, and half-brother Michael Maybin; her sister-in-law Virginia (Gin) Smith Sitton and her husband, Thomas (Tom) Sitton. She is pre-deceased by her sister Dorothy Ida Hammond Pressley and by her husband, Charles Thomas Smith, Sr. Margaret was a very devout Christian and a member of First Baptist Church of Hendersonville, N.C. She was very active in her church and was a beloved Sunday school teacher. After she graduated from high school, she was in training to become a nurse. She got married in 1939 and her only son was born in 1959. Margaret worked as a civilian for the Air Force's Air Weather Service for about 30 years and used computers long before they were popular. Margaret was a devoted mother to Charles and devoted grandmother to Chuck, James, and Mark. She is now in heaven with the Lord Jesus Christ whom she loved her whole life and to whom she dedicated her life. She was a lovely lady and will be sorely missed. A funeral service will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, November 24, 2007 at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service 1101 Greenville Hwy, Hendersonville, NC, with Rev. Wally Shamburger and Dr. Gordon Elliott officiating. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the chapel.
