Retired Army Lt. Col. Cyril R. Murphy formerly of Hendersonville died peacefully of natural causes on March 28, 2006, in Asheville, N.C. He was 99. He was a native of Ida Grove, Iowa and at an early age moved with his family to Dell Rapids, S.D. He was an alumnus of Sioux Falls College and the University of South Dakota. Prior to his military service he was employed with the Iowa Highway Commission and the U.S. Army Engineers. He served in WW II and Korea in the Field Artillery and in the Counter Intelligence Corps. His last assignment was in the Pentagon during which time he was a member of the Army General Staff. His decorations include the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Ribbon with Oak Leaf Cluster, the General Staff Insignia and numerous campaign medals. After retiring from the service he was employed with the U.S. Army as an intelligence analyst in Heidelberg, Germany and Vicenza, Italy. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hendersonville, where he served for years as an usher and Eucharistic minister, and recently a member of St. Barnabus Catholic Church, Asheville. He was a life member of the Retired Officers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a volunteer at the Oteen V.A. Hospital and a charter member of the Crooked Creakers Golf League. It was at Crooked Creek that he shot a 79 at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Ethel Olin Murphy, his wife of 14 years, Mary Kramer Murphy, and his son-in-law, Lt. Col. Ret. Miles Carter Hedrick. He is survived by daughters Donna Hedrick of Newport News, VA, Linda Traupane (Gary) of Gainesville, FL, Margy Murphy (John Erwin) and Catherine Murphy of Asheville, NC, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Donations in his memory may be made to the March of Dimes, Florida Chapter, 1831 NW 13th Street, Gainesville, FL, 32609, or to the charity of your choice. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Barnabus Catholic Church on Saturday, April 1 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery.
