Albert "Ab" Jackson, 88, of the Upward community passed away Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at Pardee Care Center.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Henderson County, the son of the late General Jackson and Fair Ellen Corn Jackson. He was also preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters, Lee Jackson, Clarence Jackson, Galileo Jackson, Glynn Jackson, Sally Jackson and Effie Jackson.
He attended Dana School. He was an Army veteran, serving in the 65th Infantry Division from 1934 to 1937. He came home to farm. He was a Henderson County Sheriff's deputy, serving under Sheriff W.G. McCall, before becoming Henderson County Sheriff. He served as sheriff from 1970 to 1994. He was one of the founders of the Upward Community Club and a member of Upward Kelly Memorial Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Vaudia A. Jackson; a daughter, Peggy Frady of Dana; a grandson, Chris Frady and wife, Dee Dee, of Upward; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Noelle Frady of Upward; a brother, Elbert Jackson of Flat Rock; and several nieces and nephews.
He also leaves behind many friends and co-workers who served and continue to serve to make Henderson County a better place.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mud Creek Baptist Church. The Revs. Rex Freeman, Todd Edmiston, Harold McKinnish, Lewis Staton and D.G. Jackson will officiate. Burial will follow at the Jones Cemetery in Upward with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Hedrick-Rhodes V.F.W. Post # 5206, Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post # 77 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter # 14. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Mud Creek Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Upward Kelly Memorial Church Building Fund, 1130 Upward Road, Flat Rock, N.C. 28731.
