John 0' Donald (Donald) Hill, 93, died at Park Ridge Hospital on Sunday. January 8, 2006, following a period of declining health. He was born June 12, 1912, to the late William and Drusilla Hill and was a lifelong resident of Henderson County. Mr. Hill was a 1928 graduate of Hendersonville High School and attended The Citadel in Charleston S.C. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and reached the rank of Master Sergeant before receiving an Honorable Discharge at the end of the war. Upon returning home to Hendersonville, Mr. Hill was employed as a surveyor's assistant. He learn the surveying profession from the bottom up and eventually became a licensed surveyor, established his own business, and was appointed as the Henderson County Surveyor. Mr. Hill sold his surveying business in 1979 and was employed by the Youngblood Oil Company for the following 15 years before retiring in 1994. Throughout his working life and during retirement, Mr. Hill enjoyed spending time with his family, and he was an avid gardener and fisherman. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hill was predeceased by his brothers, Feltz, Mack, Robert, and Theodore Hill. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Wanda Jones Hill of the home; a son, Donald Robert Hill of Hendersonville, a daughter, Suzanne Hill McDowell of Cullowhee, NC; three granddaughters, Heather Hill Buritsch of Cordova, MD, Kimberly Baker Stewart of Valdez, AK, and Meghan Leslie Baker of Boone, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Avery Buritsch and Cameron Stewart. The funeral service will be held at the Chapel In The Pines of Jackson Funeral Service in Hendersonville at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, January 11, 2006. Interment will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park with Military Rites conducted by the Hedrick-Rhodes V.F.W. Post # 5206, Hubert M. Smith American Legion Post # 77 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter # 14.. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Hill's name may be made to the North Carolina Arboretum at 100 Frederick Law Olmsted Way, Asheville, NC 28806-9315.
